GlycoMimetics Inc., (GMI) is located at Gaithersburg, MD and its mission is to develop novel small molecule therapeutics based upon the roles that carbohydrates play in important biological processes.
The Company believes that carbohydrate mimics (“glycomimetic” compounds) represent an important new class of drugs. GMI is positioned to lead this emerging field. The Company so far has identified two classes of novel and proprietary compounds with potential therapeutic utility. One class has potential in the treatment of infectious diseases with a novel mechanism of action; the second is a class of anti-inflammatory compounds which have been shown to reduce key measures of inflammation in several animal models. GlycoMimetics Inc., is developing these in parallel.
One of GMI’s lead opportunities is to treat or prevent infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium responsible for increasing numbers of infections which are proving refractory to treatment with antibiotics. This is a critical unmet need in a number of patient populations. Cystic fibrosis patients are chronically colonized by Pseudomonas, and the infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Pseudomonas is also difficult to treat in other patients, including those who develop pneumonia while on ventilators and those who suffer from urinary tract infections associated with long term catheterization.
